Blessed Christmas

Firstly, sorry for not updating the blog for the longest time.. I have been busy doing i'm not even sure what! Lol...

BUT this year has definitely been a very blessed one. Definitely a lot of challenges but the reward is worthy. Learning the ropes to run a retail outlet has been very interesting. I've also been blessed with amazing suppliers who will go the distance to help us, amazing customers who will share and guide us.... we have made so many friends over the one year of running Sugar.We would not have been able to grow without them. And of course not forgetting my amazing family & friends who have been supporting us like there's no tomorrow! Sometimes, I don't even have to say 'HELP'... they are all just always there :) Thank you guys... you know who you are... My life would not have been the same without you guys catching me when I fall, add sense to my very often 'brainless ideas' & helping me to be a better person!

Now... time to move forward! 2012... will it be the end of the world?

I still have so many parts of the world i wanna visit... so many things i wanna do but if the end of the world really happens... I dont think i will leave with any regrets. I think at where i am now, i think i have done what i can... grabbed all the opportunities that has been thrown my way.. challenged myself enough... seen the major countries i need to visit (tho it's like only 20%)... met a lot of my cake idols and even had the joy of getting to know them personally (and learn from some of them personally too!!)...

It's amazing how life is when we count our blessings and not the lemons....

2012 for now holds a lot of uncertainties but lots of crazy thoughts & ideas..

I guess i'll take it as it comes after all, i am a 'spur-of-the-moment' kinda person...

Here's wishing all of you a merry merry christmas & a happy new year! May all of you be surrounded with family & friends having lots of fun and food!

A while back, I received a request for a very big forever friends teddy on a cake and of course i said yes! It was quite last minute hence i couldn't make a proper basket for the teddy to sit in. Nevertheless, it was a fun experience!

Ever since Sugar began, I've been struggling to find time to update this blog.

I'm really sorry!

Now that Sugar is close to 5 months, things are more stable & hopefully I will be able to find more time to update my latest works. But over the next few weeks, you can expect lots & lots of posts coming up! :) That is a promise...

Ever since Sugar began, we have been flooded with so many challenges and at the same time, a lot of opportunities! It has been such a wonderful journey ever since the first thought of Sugar came about. It is all quite sudden, really.

1st of August 2010, the thought came about - 2 weeks later, we signed agreement for the shop lot (we knew exactly where we wanted it, hence we saved time in searching for a place). Then we left for a month's backpacking ard asia, came back for 3 weeks before leaving for NEC in Birmingham, UK & London for another 3 weeks & when we got back, Sugar opened 9 days later! Madness I know but I guess that's how I function best :)

Since then, I've never looked back. There's definitely a lot of challenge since I've never done any retailing but with the amazing customers we are getting & from the support of our family & friends, nothing is impossible! Oh not to mention, the suppliers we became friends - never once are they selfish with information. Always ready to guide & teach!

I sometimes question if I'm doing the right thing...

I wonder if I am clouded with the fact that there's so much to do...

but i don't think so...

I think everything about Sugar is where my heart really is at!

I really love Sugar & there's just so many reasons!

Let me try to name few...

1. I love all the products in our store - that's partly because i hand pick all the things i believe in!

2. My family & friends makes it such a fun place - nearly everyday, someone dear will pop by just to hang out or to say hi! Sometimes so many people within a day! I just love them all :)

3. The amount of creative customers we get.... ohhh that push & challenge us to the very max!

4. The opportunities we get! Crazy! Before I can launch something, someone will come in requesting for exactly what I wanna do giving us the opportunity to test them out!

5. There is still so much to do for Sugar, just the thought of it makes me excited :)

Thank you all who have been a part of making Sugar possible - There's just too many names to name. I hope you know who you are :)

Up ahead, I will be off again for 3 weeks to a land I miss so much!

No it's not for holiday...

Instead, it's time for self upgrading! 3 very intensive week!

Really excited about it!

Good things are beginning to happen before I even go :)

1. Managed to get the flight I want at a really good price tho I booked so last minute

2. I will be staying at the most amazing place! The view from my room for the whole 3 weeks is my most favorite view of Sydney!

3. The people at Balmain Wharf Apartments have been so accommodating I already feel at home! Thanks Shinny :)

This will be the view from my room! Is that amazing or what?

Hence I will not be taking any orders for the entire month of May

Madness resumes in June!

Just a note - a lot of dates are quite booked up for both June & July - lots of auspicious date, I think!

There's so much more to tell but I'll leave that to the upcoming posts

What is a thematic party?

My definition would be a party based on a specific theme (depending on the type of party) where everything is customized to suit the theme!

Look at the pictures below to get a better idea. I had the opportunity to organize a thematic party with pink & purple being its main color theme! Had so much fun preparing for it! I worked together with Alishia from One Tree, who takes care of all the pretty printables!

We will start with a cupcake cake demo session where we will guide you on how to bake a batch of chocolate cupcakes.

While the cupcakes are baking, we will start making the classic xmas decor - we will 'hand-make' rudolph, santa & snowman, all from sugar!!

Then we will cream the cupcakes and cover the cupcakes before we finish them off with the cupcake decors we have just created!

Made this special wedding cake request for Joceline & William's wedding. We have been planning and discussing about it for a while now. It will be a black & white cake with a vintage twist! Lace is such an in thing now :)

I was quite worried how it might turn out initially but I was really very happy with the outcome!

It matches the ballroom setup very well :)

And guess what? This cake is featured in UK's wedding cake magazine!

I was really surprised! I found out from a friend that my cake was featured in the October magazine but it was just a small one. Then during my recent trip to London, I saw the November magazine and as I was flipping it through... i suddenly saw this cake! Full page! I was jumping up & down at Selfridges. lol... here are some pictures from it...

It was great to have them back in Malaysia.

So for Claire's wedding, we managed to have a mini reunion!

Friends came back from all over :)

I had the honor to make their wedding cakes/cupcakes. They wanted a whimsical feel to it with creamy buttercream topped with sugar balls which they brought back from the states!

That's Dan who caught the best fish in the sea!

We customized cupcake wrappers for them to look similar to their wedding invite :)

Arranged them on a 7 tier & oh boy don't they look so grand?

Lil' Jae's Noah Ark

Fun with Sugar Art - Dibo the Dragon's 1st class

Before the 1st class for Dibo started, I was afraid it might be too easy but oh boy was I wrong!

Just Dibo alone took us close to 3 hours! But boy did we have fun :P

After 3 hours, this was the product! It was high in tension during that 3 hours hence the lack of pictures. The orange thread marks are the most tedious to do but they really make Dibo look like Dibo!

Now, meet Bunny the cute lil pink bunny

Siew Eng is always happy while creating her sugar art :)

Fun with Sugar Art - Winnie the Pooh's 2nd Class

Winnie the Pooh Part 2!

All of them are first timers at sugar paste works (except for Sandy - it's her 2nd :P)

I was so engrossed in it. So much so I forgot taking pictures till half way thru... Will let the pictures do the story telling :)

Pooh's body alone took an hour plus before we proceeded to Eeyore

Fun with sugar art continues! This time, the theme is Winnie the Pooh! It's definitely more tedious to do. Estimated about 6 hours for 4 of these cute figures!

1) What made you start “Love-A-Cupcake”? What’s the story behind it?
I used to run a restaurant and the cake supplier was very inconsistent. I got frustrated and attempted to bake on my own only to realize, I don’t enjoy the baking bit too much. Then my friends from US introduced me to fondant (sugar paste) and from there, I began to explore the amazing world of sugar art! It was definitely not a properly planned business. It’s more of a hobby turned business which is great! It’s been about 3 years and I really enjoy what I do. It is a business of passion hence my biggest challenge constantly is to keep my passion all charged up!

2) Describe yourself in 3 words!
3 words? Quirky sugar artist

3) In what ways would cakes or cupcakes add a special touch to a party or a wedding reception?
Wedding cakes and wedding cupcakes are usually the main centerpiece decor for a wedding ceremony. The cake is also symbolically the first task that the bride and groom perform jointly as husband and wife. I always ask my customers to choose the design of their wedding cakes/cupcakes to symbolize them. Some couples are very romantic while some prefers a more traditional wedding and there are also some who are very adventurous and fun! These different characteristics will portray in their choice of cake designs.

4) What is “Sugar Art”?
Sugar Art is what I do. I am not a baker but a sugar artist. The common misconception people usually have when they would like to order my cakes/cupcakes is they are buying a ‘cake’. But really, what they are buying is actually a piece of art made using sugar – hence the term sugar art! Usually for a normal order, I spend 10% of my time baking and 90% of my time hand sculpting the decor.

5) What is the most interesting cake / cupcake you’ve every made?
Amongst the cakes and cupcakes I have made, these are the ones that have challenged me to the very max

I was given an illustration and asked to create something similar. This may look easy but it took me close to a non-stop 10 hrs to complete!

I was asked to make little designer bags and shoes in an oriental theme. This took me close to a week to complete!

6) Why do you call your cakes & cupcakes “art of love”?
I call them an ‘art of love’ because I spend hours and hours creating them. I have tried to create them without adding the secret potion of ‘love’ and ‘passion’ into it and it doesn’t work. It does not materialize! The secret potion behind the success of each of my little art pieces is really the love and passion for it.

7) How do u plan to move on ahead
Sugar art is still fairly new in Malaysia. I hope in time to come, more people will start appreciating the beauty of this. I have recently started to give classes on sugar art and I feel that this might be one of the best ways for people to learn and understand the beauty of sugar art. By doing these sugar art hands on, they realize the value of it.

I have heard of many many horror stories about MILs but mine is far from all those stories. In fact, it's just the opposite! She's like our biggest & strongest wall of support. Always supporting even the craziest ideas; never doubting and always so proud of us.
